The Rescue Diver course is the one that, in hindsight, almost every diver describes as the most important. Not because it’s the most challenging—but because it completely changes your perspective. Up to this point, the focus has been on diving safely yourself. From here on, you see the whole dive site: who’s standing nervously by the ladder, whose regulator is leaking slightly, who wasn’t paying attention during the briefing.

That sounds more stressful than it actually is. In practice, you'll feel more relaxed because you know what you would do if something happened.

The course is physically demanding and surprisingly fun. You'll get wet, you'll get tired—and you'll learn more about yourself in one weekend than you did in the fifty dives before that.

What to expect

PADI e-Learning in Advance

Stress recognition, accident prevention, emergency management, handling diving accidents, and administering oxygen. Expect the course to take six to eight hours, which you can complete at your own pace. Access is included in the price and is yours to keep forever.

Self-rescue

Before you rescue someone else, take care of yourself first: relieve cramps, manage surface exhaustion, fix equipment problems in the water, and stay calm when things don't go according to plan.

Ten Rescue Drills

The core of the course: recognizing and assisting a stressed or panicked diver on the surface and underwater; retrieving an unconscious diver from the bottom; performing rescue breathing on the surface; bringing the diver out of the water; and removing the diver’s equipment in the process. This also includes search patterns for missing divers. We’ll practice in the pool first until we’ve mastered the procedures—only then will we go out into the open water.

Two Scenarios in Open Water

There are two training scenarios at the lake: a missing diver and an unconscious diver. You coordinate, you rescue, you provide care—and afterward, we’ll go over together what went well and what didn’t.

Certification

After that, you'll be a PADI Rescue Diver. You'll receive your digital certification card right away. The Rescue Diver certification is also a prerequisite for the Divemastercertification.

  • First aid/CPR training, if yours is more than 24 months old — available from us as PADI Emergency First Response for €149.

A note about gear: A jacket that fits you well makes rescue drills much easier. If you're torn between buying and renting, now is a good time to ask for advice at the store.

Requirements

  • PADI Advanced Open Water Diver — or PADI Adventure Diver with the “Underwater Navigation” adventure dive. We accept equivalent certifications from other organizations, such as CMAS or SSI. Not quite ready yet? Advanced Open Water Diver for €449.

  • First aid and CPR training, completed within the last 24 months. No formalities—you’ll practice CPR during the course. The PADI Emergency First Response course for €149 meets this requirement; an equivalent course from another provider is also acceptable.

  • Minimum age: 15 years. Ages 12–14: Junior Rescue Diver.

  • PADI Diver Medical Questionnaire Before the course begins— standard for every diving course.

Rescue Diver in Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main region

Theory and preparation take place at our location in Frankfurt-Schwanheim, Vogesenstraße 12C; pool exercises are held at the Frankfurt Sports School swimming pool. Customer parking is available behind the building (entrance at Am Kirchholz 12); to get there, take the A5 and then Schwanheimer Bahnstraße. It takes 15 to 20 minutes from Sachsenhausen, Niederrad, and Höchst, and a good half hour from Offenbach, Rüsselsheim, Hanau, and Bad Homburg.

We'll practice both scenarios at a lake in the Rhine-Main region. A rescue scenario with moderate visibility and a water temperature of 14 degrees is more realistic than one in a pool in Hurghada—and there's a good chance you'll be diving under exactly those conditions during some of your dives.

What comes after the Rescue Diver course?

FAQ

  • 449 euros. This includes e-learning, training, pool exercises, two open-water scenarios, a tank, tank fills, pool and lake fees, and certification. The equipment rental package costs an additional 80 euros.

  • Yes. PADI requires first aid and CPR training that is no more than 24 months old. With us, you can take the Emergency First Response course for 149 euros. An equivalent course from another provider is also accepted.

  • No, the 24-month period is a strict deadline. And that makes sense: CPR won't work in an emergency if you haven't practiced it recently.

  • Six to eight hours of e-learning beforehand, followed by theory and pool exercises, as well as a day at the lake for the two scenarios—usually spread out over one or two weekends.

  • Yes. Dragging a diver with all their gear along the surface and getting them out of the water is physically demanding work. But it's about technique, not strength—and that's exactly what you'll learn in the course.

  • There is no minimum number of participants—only the Advanced Open Water Diver course. We do, however, recommend some prior experience: If you’re struggling with your own buoyancy, you won’t have much capacity to help others.

  • Ages 15 and up. Ages 12 to 14 as a Junior Rescue Diver.

  • Especially then. On vacation, you’re diving with different partners and in groups you don’t know. Being able to spot who’s about to run into trouble is especially valuable in that situation.
